Apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma in dogs

Apocrine gland anal sac ADC accounts for 2% of all skin tumors. Anal sac ADC is more common in dogs and very rare in catsOther anal sac tumors include adenoma and SCC. Metastasis and hypercalcemia is rare in cats with anal sac ADC but common in dogs.Metas: 56%-79% metastatic rate at the time of diagnosis with regional lymph node very common (47%-72%). Metastatic sites: regional lymph nodes (sublumbar), lungs, spleen, bone (appendicular and axial skeleton), pancreas, heart, and mediastinum.Surgery: Aggressive saline diuresis ± diuretic therapy may be required prior to surgery if hypercalcemic with renal failure. Wide local resection: Resection of < 50% of anal sphincter will cause transient but…

Oral squamous cell carcinoma in dog, bilateral rostral mandibulectomy-Carcinom scvamocelular oral la câine, mandibulectomie rostrala bilaterala

Bilateral rostral mandibulectomy is indicated as treatment for rostral mandibular tumors (Squamous cell carcinoma, SCC, in this dog). This was a retroincisive tumor. Position is dorsal recumbency, with better exposure for dissection and osteotomy. Labial mucoasa is incised with at least 1 cm gross margins and dissection is continued around mandibular body. Next is the osteotomy of the mandible with rapid bleeding control from the mandibular canal. Mandibular stabilisation is not necessary.Complications, as in this case, are not uncommon and are wound dehiscence, bone edge exposure, pain, drooling, excessive tongue. There are different ways of approaching dehiscence. Preventing wound tension, vertical mattress suture use, hole drilling, bone edge with no tooth…

Carcinomul scvamocelular auricular la pisica-Auricular SCC in cats

    Maxillectomy in dogs

Maxillectomy/Mandibulectomy is a type of surgery that is recommended in oral oncologic surgery in order to control local disease. It is recommended for malign but also for some benign oral tumors in dogs an cats. The more caudal it gets the more complicated the surgery. Some benign tumors, like fibromatous epulis, when they become large enough, with bone involvement, require large excisions like a central maxillectomy or caudal maxillectomy. Even in this type of tumors margins are essential, given that fibromatous epulis arises from periodontal ligament and in incomplete excision, local recurrence is expected. Metastasis is not of concern, in this case. This is a male dog, castrated, 9 yo. Client education…

SCC of the nose in dogs

This is an older oncology case of a 6 y f/s, bichon frise with a previous unresponsive to treatment mass of the left alar wing. After investigations, including FNA, this came back as SCC. This was bad news for all involved, owners, dog and medical team. The good part is that there is a low risk for metastasis. The bad news is that surgery should be aggressive to lower the risks for local invasion and/or recurrence. Key points before surgery are owner consent, proper and fair discussions about the objectives, possible outcome and complications. One of the hardest to deal points are the after surgery appearence for the owner and…
